on 1st of January 2012, Nigeria's president Goodluck Jonathan decided to give a whole nation of more than 160 million people, a new years present. He removed the subsidy on fuel which they've been enjoying for years in order to cut cost of the government.

Traditional TV loosing viewers to the Internet and online media.I have read a lot of articles lately talking about traditional media loosing its viewership to the internet.Of course, the provision off an alternative news and entertainment source or media has reduced the viewership and following of traditional media, but the concern here is will this so called "new media" takeover from the traditional media we grew up watching? just after I made my last post I used the microsoft frontpage 2003. I have been using the 2000 version and I noticed some changes between them. The newer version has a lot of new features. some that could even be used in building web2.0 sites.
A good example of the features is the upload function which allows users to upload a picture or a file to the web server. the file could be the users picture, a sound file or a video. I think the new vista improved on theses functions to become a second generation web application builder.

This is not my first post on the development of web2.0 in Africa. Well in the other post I wrote that i didnt believe Africa is ready for web2.o and wrote my reasons, well I have found more reasons. To enjoy the best of web2.0 and what it has to offer, you need a fast internet connection or a broadband in other to stream all the videos and pics you can find on youtube, myspace, flickr and more. Well we Africans know that a fast internet connection is very rare on the continent and even as far as I am concerned, the thing is even getting worse and slower in places like Nigeria.

With the birth of so many african social networks and other user generated content sites, One would ask if Africa is now embracing web 2.o just like europe and America.
We have by far a lesser number of internet users in Africa than in europe and America, I have seen some social networking sites in Africa with over 6 thousand members. you cant compare this with the tens of millions of people that use social networking sites in Europe and America.
may be web 2.0 shouldnt be introduced to Africa through social networking because I dont even think many Africans have the time and money to sit in front of a computer with an internet connection and spend hours browsing profiles, reading blogs and viewing pictures and videos posted by other africans.

Nigeria has made itself a name in the global online fraud market or better known as 419 in the country. Now the country is putting up and fighting against those scammers. Now the agency in charge of stopping online fraud and other financial crimes in the country, the EFCC has banned all night browsing in internet cafes in the country.
The agency believes that the scammers take advantage of the all night internet surfing which costs them a little over a dollar to launch there fraudulent campaigns over the internet, when it is working ours in other parts of the world especially the USA.
I also believe that this is a good move by the government in curbing this menace, but they need to do more and focus on catching the scammers and bringing them to justice. I know with a little investment into some internet tracking tools, the scammers would never feel safe again and they would be out of work. I have a lot of concepts on how to easily develop these tools.

As you can see this post was made on the 1st of september 2006 and afriville.com was only registered on the 14th of november 2006, thats a month and two weeks after I blogged about the idea. (you can go to whois.com and check for a domain name's availability and also find out when it is registered when you click on look up domain from the whois result page).

In my blog post I talked about making afriville.com an african social networking site, and that is exactly what the people that copied my idea ended up doing. This is a direct lifting of my idea.

I plan to take legal and online action.

The obvious thing is that the people that now own afriville, came across my idea and picked even the domain i wrote in the post and registered without consulting or informing me.

Thats a very dumb thing to do. Now what if they lose the domain name?

Though most africa teams got knocked out the world cup at the first round stage, the world cup fever here is still very much alive.
The country I am in, Nigeria didnt make it to the world cup but I still have reason to watch. I am supporting England and I hope they win their match against Ecuador that is already underway. And later I will relax to watch portugal take on Holland.

African music in Nigeria has recently seen a boom with new artist coming out and existing ones releasing new albums. Just recently Styl-Plus released their new album and its already a hit.
I have a lot of friends who want to be musicians, some have already recorded while some are yet to.
I had some interest in music back around 2000 and 2001 but I got carried away by business and internet marketing but I would probably someday invest some money in music or get a recording studio or atleast bring back my free music download business The African music network.

I am the founder of the African music network back in 2003, I worked very hard on creating and promoting it and it grew very big. But I didn't plan from the beginning.

Like the Big internet marketers say, keep your eyes on the money! I didn't. So it got to a point whereI had a big site but no money coming in. So I had to revise my strategy and put the money first. I figured I had to reach profitability, Now I have to find money to buy african music videos and songs and also pay for the hosting and domain name.

Thats for sure a huge investment Considering the fact that the website offers free African music download.

So I have to raise some money by hosting ads on the site and by getting donations. The donations are really going to help both me and the users of the site by bringing back the website and making it possible for anyone to enjoy the reach African culture through the Music. As we all know, I'm tirelessly working hard on bringing back our favorite music download network, African music network.
Unfortunately there is a little setback.
We need some money in order to bring back the site and get more free music for our members (membership is free). We are finding it a little hard to raise the required amount. And of course we want the music to be free, but if we can't keep it like that, we may decide to charge users a little amount for their membership.

As I've already mentioned, I'm planning to bring back African music network before the end of this month. I also plan to add a lot more new songs and videos to our current collection which will also be available for download for free at http://africanmusicnetwork.com.

So I plan to raise some money in order to make it possible to get as many select songs as possible from many of the countries accross Africa in order to give more music and video downloads to our visitors.

However, since the African music network is a non-profit site (because we give downloads for free) I've been working to raise the required amount and have successfully raised some amount which is not enough to undertake the task of improving the site and making available more music and videos.

Today, I'm so happy to announce that I've finally decided to bring back the African music network.
In case you are hearing of the site for the first time, let me give you a brief description of the site.
I started a non-profit website www.africanmusicnetwork.com in August of 2004, which offers free African music and video downloads. Despite the sites success in a very short time, the site was shut because of lack of funds.

Anyway, the good news is I have decide to bring back the site, and African music lovers will be able to enjoy the music they LOVE for free once again.

If you ask me, right now there is a big boom in african music. First of all we've seen a growing number of talented african artists and a growing demand for african music.
I guess this all because of the hard work on the side of the artists.

A few years back African themselves preferred foreign music and only a few African musicians were making it big then.

Gone are those days. Today african music is gaining popularity overseas in Europe the US and many other places.

I've always found african musicians as interesting and talented, though some are just there to mimic western artists.
But the ones that I relly respect are those that no matter what, bring the african tradition into their musical style. Lets take Eedris Abdulkareem for example, in his last album, he made a song in Hausa. Though his musical style may seem western, he regularly puts hausa clauses in his songs. ( hope we don't forget his little scuffle with New York rapper 50 cent).
